Rain Penetration

Rain Penetration TreatmentImproving the thermal resistance of walls through the use of conventional insulation i not always practical particulary where older buildings are concerned. Many homes and commercial properties in the UK are built using single skin walls, making them unsuitable for cavity wall insulation. The insulation of internal insulation can be disruptive and takes up valuable living space whilst externally applied insulation is often unattractive. It is a well-known fact that porous masonry materials such as brick, stone, concrete, and mortar are worse insulators when they are wet. Chemical creams are a highly effective preventative method of protecting the brick from absorption of moisture and maximising the energy efficiency of the walls and therefore increasing the properties capability of holding its heat.

Chemical creams can be used to increase the flood resistance of masonry as part of a flood resistance or resilience system and can also be very effective in protecting red brick from erosion caused by frost and weathering. It is particularly effective when used in conjunction with re-pointing up to design flood height using a mortar incorporating re-pointing additive.

NCDP employ the following methods to remedy moisture penetration:

  • Chemical creams are applied to exterior walls by either brush, spray or roller application
  • Re-pointing as required using a suitable water repellent additive.
